I’m one movie into my John Hughes mournfest. Can you believe that I’ve never seen a single frame of Pretty In Pink? I don’ t know how in 20 years I’ve never even seen a scene from the movie. Every single moment was brand new to me. Which was actually quite special because I got this brand new John Hughes fix from the same year as Ferris Bueller. Very pure John Hughes. My six word review is: Howard Deutch is a terrible director. Not John Hughes’ most groundbreaking script, but so many more moments would’ve been found under him I would think.

I’m off to Netflix Now, which has Career Opportunities, a film in the Hughes oeuvre that I’ve always been interested in, but never checked out. I’m in serious completist mode now.

It sucks that John Hughes has to die to remind me just how much I love him. But I’ve just been thinking about his movies constantly over the last 24 sad sad hours.

If anyone wants to hear a very rare 47 minute interview with Hughes, Slashfilm has posted one, also available on iTunes from AFI.

What a man. I will now embark on a two week long John Hughes viewing spree (sorry The Wire)

She’s a drummer, he’s a mechanic… Marty McFly’s mom (Caroline, the one from the city) is having weird married person sex with Craig Sheffer (who? OH, him) and they are ALL in high school.

I think this was the last teen film I truly enjoyed as a teen and this opening reminds me why…. it takes the characters seriously in the exact same way teenagers can take things sooo seriously. All goofy and committed and pushing 30…

Spoiler alert: Eric Stoltz, the lead, does not walk into a train in the first 45 seconds of the movie.

I think today would be best spent hunting through the 9 Billion clips on YouTube and the inter’webs finding some of the greatest scenes from John Hughes. He defined teenage angst and Chicago. If it weren’t for all the geeks who have seen Star Wars 300 times a year for the past 30 years, he could even be one of the most quoted writers/directors ever.

I mean really. Take this quarter, go downtown, and have a rat gnaw that thing off your face! Good day to you, madam.
