04.09.08Fox News is Very Colorful
But I wouldn’t know what they are saying, because for the past 3 days, the local newscast is muted. Seriously, no sound. The rest of the network programming works and I can hear all the commercials fine, but the actual newscast 9pm and 10pm are mute. I am wondering though if that is a sweeps week stunt. Maybe the graphics people flipped a switch and are now using this new news to justify how great the “look” is. Puts a lot of pressure on the scroll operator… -

02.27.08Jack Cafferty didn’t read my email
Earlier tonight on Wolf Blitzer, Jack Cafferty was going on about how popular his blog has become, and that today 11,000 people emailed him with their thoughts on the campaign. I ran to the computer, found his email, and sent him the following message:
Subject: “Greetings in Real Time” –Hi Jack: Hopefully, this email marks your 11,001st email. Congrats on the red letter day! Dick Lugar in 08! Best, Sandy from Chicago.
Got this response:
We appreciate your sending us your comments, but next time you may want to try posting it directly on Jack’s new blog. It’s getting a huge response and it’s a great way to join the conversation.

So Chicago Hometown Hero
Kanye WestCommon will be playing a superhero. A black superhero. Traditionally, the only real named black superhero that shares tights with Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Green Lantern. Now, although the WGA Strike has put the Justice League of America movie on hold - Common has gone on record with:“It’s a blessing really, to know that I could potentially be this superhero,” he enthused. “Justice League itself is an honor, and Green Lantern is an incredible character to play. It’s a blessing to be associated with it.”
In particular, Common felt it was a special privilege to be the cast’s only black super.
“Just being a black person, a black man, playing a superhero is an honor in itself,” he smiled.
So. Common has nailed the single black role in the movie! Sure beats a stupid little Grammy, huh? Take that Kanye.
Of course, we here at Schadenfreude feel for you Kanye… We know you need to be in movies. Heck, we even wrote a role for you. That’s right… a role for you. Let us know, we’ll take your email.

02.10.08Kanye West Makes All Men (and Women) Cry.So the Grammys gave Chicago Own’s Kanye West a chance to pay tribute to his mother who died earlier this year. This came right after him playing “Stronger” - and although the Interwebs were running amok with the rumors of him playing it - it still didn’t prepare the audience (at Staples and at home) for the emotion behind it.
Ok - I admit it, I’ve always like this song. So to see it now - yeah, in my opinion, has more feeling than Elton John singing the Princess Diana died song….

I watched CNN’s coverage of Super Fat Tuesday and Lou Dobbs needs to test his self tanner on a small patch of his arm before applying to his whole head. And then when he applies his “burnt umber” foundation, he should check himself in natural light before he goes on air. Also, Wolf Blitzer needs to get a grip on his colors. Barack is dark blue, Hillary is light blue. Memorize that shit before you go on air. And David Gergen needs to get some rest and tame his fly-aways. And Suzanne Malveaux needs to calm down with the pronunciation of her name. And Jon King needs to respect his power with that wipe board/plasma TV thing — just because you can draw big circles around everything doesn’t mean you should.

Jesse Thorn interviews comedians and hipsters and he brought his show to Chicago last month. We were lucky enough to perform in it! 11.08.07Schad, Like Tracy Chapman, Talks about the RevolutionWe tour colleges. We sometimes teach workshops. Those workshops are all about writing sketch comedy in a quick, concise manner. It has all the other stuff in it too, but this is the backbone. It’s usually an hour or so and it is sometimes tough to tell if the students were into it or severely bored or just biding time til they could hit the bong again. We just got a great e-mail from Max at Carleton College that calms our fears. It’s about a new show they are trying out:
This is an entire play that we’ve written, using the very techniques you guys taught us! It’s historic because such a show (written and performed all in 9 weeks, entirely by students) has never been attempted at this school before. Never. We just wanted to thank you again from the bottom of our hearts. So if Schadenfreude is ever feeling down, feeling like you have no purpose in the world, just remember that in a little college town in Northfield, MN, you helped some upstart comedians get their start and make history in their corner of the world.
