Whatever Happened To…

canal-walk-food-court1Food Courts?

Are they still as popular today as they once were? Think about all the movies that we grew up with that had PIVOTAL scenes that take place in the local food court. From “Weird Science” to “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” to “Blues Brothers” to “Can’t Buy Me Love” to “Pretty in Pink” to anything with Molly Ringwald to “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” – I’m sure if you put your mind to it, you could come up with a half-dozen others.

But now… There’s “Mallrats” – which Kevin Smith has officially declared an “homage” to those movies, and “Superbad” – where the last scene of the movie takes place in a mall, but not necessarily a food court. When did they lose favor? Was it when kids stopped hanging out together and everyone is IMing and TXTing? Is it because everyone realized that Food Court food is actually kinda shitty? Is it because malls are now all “outdoor beasts” like Old Orchard, and sit-down restaurants like Cheesecake Factory have moved in? Is it because the licensing of all the different brands that show up in a food court is cost-prohibitive from shooting a scene in a Food Court?
