Rankin & Bass Rip-Off Artists

Now, I’m not going to claim that the ad agencies are raping my childhood memories by COMPLETELY ripping off this style of animation. I’m not going to whine and moan about how they are tapping into my childish psyche in order to get me to pay attention to their wares. I won’t even bring up the fact that the ads themselves are on THAT side of lame.

Now, I’m not going to claim that the ad agencies are raping my childhood memories by COMPLETELY ripping off this style of animation. I’m just gonna bring up that just because one company does it, it doesn’t mean EVERYONE has to do it. From Apple to US Cellular to Puffs – everyone’s doing it, and it’s just really beginning to piss me off.

I mean, c’mon, Apple. You are better than that. Sure, Mac and PC guys are pretty much spent – the horse has been beaten dead, tanned, and is now horse jerky – you don’t need Santa, you need a new concept.

So guys – leave Rankin & Bass animation to the experts. To the guys who tell stories about the elf who wants to be a dentist, to the abominable snow man who has a toothache, and to the adorable little reindeer who has an unfortunate affliction of the proboscis.

Just because it’s the holidays, doesn’t mean that ad agencies get to take off – this is when they should be showing us their A game. Not their late-night-over-red-bull-watching-ABC cast-offs.
