“Make It Sound Like You Are Wearing That Wig”

The picture shown was taken on the veranda at WBEZ’s studio on Navy Pier during one of our marathon recording weekends. Sometimes we’d sit in the sun during lunch before we’d have to head back into our dark recording cave. Interesting fact, all of us had a Vitamin D deficiency by the time our radio show went off the air. But, digress…
You might be able to guess why it was difficult for us to bring our Phudie Mart characters to life on the radio — that’s right — because our audience couldn’t see us. And for someone who relies heavily on mugging and milking, making Slim (and all my other fave Schad characters) funny was an interesting task. All of a sudden, I couldn’t rely on my wig and Stevie Nick’s like outfits — I had to create a whole new bag of tricks.
During one of our recording sessions I remember Justin saying, “You have to make it sounds like you are wearing that wig.”

All of a sudden, I couldn’t rely on my wig and Stevie Nick’s like outfits — I had to create a whole new bag of tricks.
During one of our recording sessions I remember Justin saying, “You have to make it sounds like you are wearing that wig.” At the time I probably responded by saying, “Yeah, no shit! Any ideas how I do that??!”
Well one of the tricks I used a lot — if I can get all ‘Inside the Actor’s Studio’ for a moment — is to say one of my favorite Slim lines from our stage show before every take. Huh? Huh? Who says I can’t write a book called “Acting for the Radio: A Journey from Stage Lights to Hot Mics”???
In case you are wondering the line is this:

“Awwww, I caaan’t! I already took my 3 designated 20 minute breaks!”

I know. That line of dialogue means nothing without the context of the scene, but trust me it’s 101% Slim Castellano.
Feel free to use that trick the next time you have big boardroom presentation or are testifying before Congress. You can thank me later by purchasing my book.
