Trader Joe’s Banter

Does anyone know if the check-out people at Trader Joe’s are required to make specific banter with you while they bag your groceries? Every single time I’m there the cashier has picked a specific item in my cart and said, “Oh, have you tried these before? They are really good!” Or, occassionally, he or she will single out an item and say, “I’ve never tried this one before. Do you like it?” It’s always one item and they do it whether or not we are making additional small talk. It’s starting to feel a bit like the GAP where the workers HAVE to greet you when you walk in the door — even if they are 110 yards away and not making eye contact with you. Anybody know the scoop? Is it in the TJ’s training manual or something?
