Species II - James Cromwell

Ok – so the plan yesterday was to have Sheila and I act out the scene of me asking James Cromwell to sign a copy of Species II for me. It really was one of “those moments.”

Sheila got all staged-fright, and then it got dark, and then we realized we packed the DVD in a “safe place” that we couldn’t find, so here I am now, to relay to you one of the best conversations I’ve ever had with a star (second only to the time I gave John Popper a bag of shit – wish you knew that story, don’t you?)

The FULL STORY after the jump – and it’s a doozy!

To paint the picture – let me take you to a balmy Sunday night in Delaware. The graduating class of the PTTP of 2007 had just exited, exalted in their accomplishments, and had just finished listening to some inspiring words from not only the venerable James Cromwell, but also his equally enchanting and talented “better half” – Joan Macintosh. I walk up to him in my Sunday best, extend my hand and:

Me: Mr. Cromwell-
Mr. Cromwell: Call me Jamie.
Me: Jamie – thank you for your inspiring words.
Jamie: Well, thank you for your assistance when I first arrived, and I just hope that what I said inspires people to do their best.
Me: The pleasure was all mine, being a fan of yours as long as I have. From Revenge of the Nerds to L.A. Confidential, and now this season on 24, you show some amazing range.
Jamie: Well, thank you for that. I’m glad you enjoy my work. (begins to look over my shoulder, as though my 15 seconds are up)
Me: Oh! Jamie – I was wondering if you would be so kind as to sign a copy of a movie you starred in, just as a remembrance of what you said? (offering copy of Species II and a silver Sharpie with which to sign)
Jamie: (grabbing movie without really looking at it first) Sure. (finally looks down, and see Species II staring right back up at him) This movie? (he looks at movie, then me, then movie again, then me, and throws his head back, laughs) You know, there are boxes and crates of unopened copies of this movie scattered around the world. And that’s where they should remain. (he uncaps the silver Sharpie, and signs what you see tot he left – best part is, he spelled Stephen correctly)
