The More-Than-Complete Story of Roadtrip 2007 & Waffles pt. 4

8:30am THE NEXT MORNING
Same time, same place for 8 years. Here we were, once again, at 8:30am, gathered outside of Kate and Sandy’s place, ready to take to the road, another in a list of warm and fuzzy memory-sparkers. Schadenfreude has been road-tripping to Colleges since 1999, a lot of hotels, a lot of highway hours, a lot of schools, a lot of memories. Five or six hours of listening to Howard Stern, telling stories, and doing bits. It’s like our summer camp, our time away from the real world, playing pretend, once again. This time living the life of rock star comedians on tour. Only this time we were actually hitting two colleges in two days, so it felt more like a tour than the usual one college.

We arrived at Carelton College, checked into our hotel and were escorted to the venue by long-time friend, Chris Rasinen…

Chris is Sandy’s Brother John’s College buddy and campus RA. Actually he’s not an RA, they either have a new name for RA’s or he’s not an RA, I never got a clear answer as getting to the bottom of that involved a great deal of passive-aggressivity that comes with people who are avoiding maligned versions of their present titles. I list Interactive Comedy Specialist on my resume as opposed to “jackass.”

The venue was huge, a 500 seats concert/orchestra/performance hall. It would’ve been a really embarrassing show if it were filled with anything less than 300. NOT MACALESTAR has three comedy troupes! THREE!! Wow, this comedy shit’s getting popular. Two of the troupes, their sketch and short form groups opened for us and did a great job, there was a RIDICULOUS sketch in which they took the old Chili’s Birthday Song and took it as far as it could be taken, including a re-enactment of Vietnam.

As I watched the short-form show I was awash in a different sort of memory. Fourteen years ago that was me performing with my college improv troupe The Tower Players. That was me and many people that I’m still friends with to this day, and all who have forged some place in Chicago comedy, Andy Eninger, Becky Eldridge, Matt Larsen, Steve Gadlin, Fred Mowery, Larry Shure, Heather Elam, Roommate Stephe Gluck, and out in L.A. Dave Sachs, Matt Lenhart, Johanna Smith, and Rob Montgomery. Yes, at one time, all of those people were onstage together with me, and they’re still good friends. Good times, a defining event.

We went on and did, what we all agree, is one of the best shows we’ve ever done. Top Ten. There were 540 people in the theatre and they were so loud, and so receptive of every joke. They just got everything and enjoyed the hell out of everything. Nothing fell flat. Loud loud loud laughter. For anyone who saw our final sets at the Heartland, that’s the set we do when we introduce ourselves to a new college. The High School Yearbook, Bob Childers (Snickers Bar taped inside his ass), Sign Language, Loco Pantalones. Sketches which became our “canon” running order. So, a lot of memories there.

But College tours arent’s ALL about bringing the funny, sometimes it’s about bringing the party….
