Rob’s In For Slithis!!

Monty (roommate 1993-1994) will be traveling from Santa Barbara to see Slithis Thrusday night! WHO ELSE IS IN!!! Okay, here’s the story on Slithis. I’m 6, maybe 7, living in Vandalia, OH. Dino DeLaurentis’ 197something Jeff Bridgesploitation film, King Kong, is still playing the drive-ins. At the Melody 49 in Union, OH, King Kong is playing with Slithis. I still very very very clearly remember the night we were going to the drive-in, I sat at the kitchen table staring at the ad for the drive-in. And I was staring at the above image of Slithis. What kid wouldn’t want to see THAT, look at him. DeLaurentis spends more money than God on King Kong and much like the kid who’d rather play with the box than the toy, I want to see Slithis. We arrive late (anyone know my Mom?) and I’ve missed the beginning of Slithis but am rapt with attention for the rest of it. I realize now, as an adult, it’s the first time I’ve ever seen blood onscreen.
King Kong comes and goes, and then they start RUNNING SLITHIS AGAIN! But Mom and Dad 2.0 want to leave, so I watch the opening of Slithis out the back window of the 1978 Chevrovlet Monza.

And that was that. I forgot about it. Until video is invented…

The studios lag behind on their properties making video an indie/exploitation paradise for a couple years. I see the video box cover of Slithis at David G’s in Englewood, OH and it all comes back to me. I beg my Mom to rent it every week. No way. No way. No way. There are Howie Mandel movies to rent. In fairness my Mom rented Chainsaw Massacre for me and Richard Jones when we were thirteen, no complaints. I forget about Slithis

Later, in college, I befriend some real movie nuts, The Hollis Brothers, and for four years, that’s all we do, manage our seperate video stores in Oxford, and watch movies. The Hollis’ hobby was tracking down the obscure and claimed they could find anything. One night, during some marathon I was poking through their Videohound guide and came across a familiar word. “Slithis”. It all came back to me. I challenged them to find a copy.

In 1997, twenty years after the drive-in, I finally sat down and watched the movie completely. I looked up some information on the director, found out he lived in Venice and looked him up. He was in the phone book. I called, talked to his daughter, got nervous, and hung up.

There’s no movie that marks various influential times of my life, and Thursday night, now living in L.A., I’ll be seeing it again a print that Quentin Tarantino personally owns. I know Quentin Tarantino because the Hollis Brothers showed me this new movie in 1993 called Reservoir Dogs.
