Which Story Would You Lead With?

Let’s play a fun game. Yesterday was one of the best news days in a long time. You had the CTA slowdown beginning, the Trib being sold to Sam Zell and the top Cop “retiring”. Not to mention it was opening day! Man, if they could have busted a Streets and Sans guy for a bribe and caught R. Kelly peeing on someone, it would have been one for the history books. But today, as we begin the next day news cycle, what would you lead with? If you were the crabby old fart who had to run the newsroom, what story was the most important? Let’s rank, after the jump.

I used to do this as part of my job when I produced a morning radio program. It’s fun as hell. Yesterday was a wet dream! and the fluid was news!

Here’s what I would say:

1) Top Cop Resigns. The CTA guy, the Top Cop, the Housing jerk-off and the Mayor are the top positions in Chicago. Maybe throw in the Clerk? So the Top Cop Phil Cline going down is number 1. He went down because Daley was in Greece or somewhere on vacation and had to watch that video-tape of that off-duty guy kickin the shit out of the chick. You know that probably ruined Maggie’s cruise. He probably got all red-faced and had to put peanut butter under his tongue (ed bus joke). Awesome that yesterday was his first day back, ey?

2) Trib Sell to Zell. It’s amazing that with very little notice or a ton of notice we didn’t pay attention to, the biggest media company in Chicago is sold. So that means we now have a face to blame for when WGN TV, Radio, CLTV, the Cubs, the Tribune and RedEye suck it up. And I kind of like the dude. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a billionaire, but he seems pretty eccentric rich. That’s my favorite kind.

3) CTA. That sucks it is slow. Tomorrow WBEZ is doing a story where they are going to race with bike, car and CTA to get from one neighborhood to another. Funny, cool idea. For 1996. Seriously, I did that exact story for a show I worked on called “Metropolis” with Aaron Freeman. Whatever, all news goes round and all media coverage is the same. Hint: 100 bucks on the bike winning by 14 minutes.

Now, what’s your opinion? Play News Director and let me know how you would rank the newspaper today!?
