Americas Top Model Wants Me!

Last night I watched ANTM because Julie and Stephen have been raving about it this season. SS, it’s intervention time. The show hasn’t changed much and by watching it, I’ve lifted my temporary boycott. I have boycotted the show twice and then both times realized it was so irrelevant it didn’t matter. I watched last night and the emotional milking is at it’s peek! Also, what’s with the inordinate amount of product placement? Screw product placement, ATM should steal a page from channel 11 and have a pledge drive if they are so hard up for cash. More model fun after the jump!

But see, I watch the show because I am the ultimate outsider, looking in at something that’s not mine. So I can judge at an arms length. I mean, they aren’t going after me. I’m the wrong demographic. Then I see the commercials. One for Disneyland. One for Sea World. One for Jamaica. One for baby band-aids. One for Osco (perscriptions). One for Breathe-right strips. One for chocolate cravings Special K. One for insurance (again all about babies). Am I missing something? Those are not commercials geared towards the hip, hungry and young? Aren’t urbanites and 19 year olds watching UPN’s ATM? It turns out it’s probably more 30+ moms (who make their husbands watch). They are reliving what could have been in modeling and since that new baby won’t leave you alone while you watch, why not take an Ambien and go to Sea World?

The point is that most of the products and programs that I watch as an “outsider” actually have me in the crosshairs. They know what I am doing. So they market towards it. So how can you be an “outsider” in today’s pop-culture? Watch Reba? I’ll bet they have commercials for Borat DVDs and the sale at the Gap. Shit, if they start selling new platforms for blogging software, I’m throwing in the towel.
