I Think I am in a Mental Decline

circle-tv-800.jpg

I used to consider myself an intelligent, sophisticated and groomed individual with particular tastes. Now I’m thinking I’m not who I thought I was.

Most of it comes from looking at what’s stored on my TiVo. (I’m not even going to mention my unusual akin for music by former boy-band members.)

Want to see what’s hanging out in my TiVo – and my justification? Hit the jump – and let’s just say, I think Felecia is an early front-runner, and it’s too bad ANTM put themselves – wait. Hit the jump. This is just getting embarrassing.

Ok. I’ll start with ANTM – since it started last night. I’ll admit. I didn’t get home until 11, and after watching Lost – I immediately started this up.

It’s not just about cute girls wearing nothing – it’s about watching young people idealize the world around them. It’s about having unfounded confidence. Confidence based on perception, and not facts. It’s about not having any talent, no training, and yet proving that modeling is just listening to the people around you. If anything, this show goes beyond any other to completely demean the industry. Look pretty, act “fierce”, arch your back and don’t look dead – and you will go far. It’s reassuring to know that no one will have a “America’s Next Top HTML Coder” – you need some semblance of talent to do that. So yes, I watch it. I watch it to remind myself that there are still petty people out there with overblown self-perceptions.

And there are others that support that.

30-rock.jpg

30 Rock is one of the funniest shows on television. It has really hit it’s stride – and it’s not even done with the first season yet. I don’t watch Earl – but there’s just something about Jamie Presley that creeps me out. I think it has to do with an episode of FastLane she was in (one of the GREATEST shows of all time – is that out on DVD yet??) where she played a freaky lesbian and made out with the chick from Saved By the Bell… Anyways. The characters are great, the writing is getting wittier – and they are really trying new things with the medium. Smarter cutaways, risque jokes – and laugh out loud one-liners. This is a show I can consistently laugh with. Plus Alec Baldwin. You just can’t beat a Baldwin brother. [insert laugh track here]

Do I even need to mention American Idol? I don’t think so. I’ve already admitted that one. And got subsequently yelled at for NOT watching Star Search. Shoot me. I like to see people with talent and desire do their thing (the corollary of why I watch ANTM – see, there is method to my madness!)

And 24? Click the link. ‘Nuff said.

What else is embarrassing? Dirt. God forbid I think Courtney Cox is hot – but I do. I sadly never watched Friends. Wait. Did I say, sadly? *sigh* But besides – Dirt is a fun show. It’s all about the seedy underbelly of tabloids. With FX style. Imagine what would happen if you crossed Pepper Dennis with The Shield – and there you have Dirt.

Ok… I’m getting a little self-conscious. Check out Part 2 of this investigative report later. I’ll admit to watching soft-core porn on SkinaMax Cinemax, and other nasty little secrets of my TV watching habits.
