Form Blazing Sword!

The lovely Christina had a birthday gift for me when I came into town last January for a little scriptwriting and Bears-watching. A season box-set of Voltron. As you can imagine I have watched a SHITLOAD of cartoons in my life, but nothing comes close to the obsession I had over Voltron…

I had no idea how deep my love for this cartoon went. I just eat it up like a little kid. When they form blazing sword, I tear up. Every time.

I love the opening narration, Optimus Prime is so serious when he reads it.

From days of long ago, from uncharted regions of the universe, comes a legend. The legend of Voltron: Defender of the Universe. A mighty robot, loved by good, feared by evil.

In other words, legend has it there’s the really good robot, but that legend comes from some place nobody’s been to.

As Voltron’s legend grew, peace settled across the galaxy.

Did you say legend has it there’s this really good robot? May my sword never leave this ground I lay it upon…

On Planet Earth, a Galaxy Alliance was formed, together with the good planets of the Solar System they maintained peace throughout the universe.

Right kind of them. I’m assuming this is BECAUSE of the really good robot otherwise it’s merely a tangent…

Until a new horrible menace, threatened the galaxy.

Oh come on horrible menace we were saving that cake for LATER.

Voltron was needed once more.

That’s all it took, a new horrible menace? What a worthless Galaxy Alliance.

This is the story of the superforce of space explorers. Specially trained and sent by the alliance to bring back, Voltron: Defender of the Universe.

That’s the last line. You realize the flaw? It sets up a story that’s resolved in the first episode. They FIND Voltron in the first episode. A more accurate version might read…

This the story of the superforce that FOUND Voltron and battled Robeasts as individual lions until that didn’t work and then formed Voltron until that didn’t work and then formed blazing sword which always worked.

I could write a killer Voltron screenplay.

That is the funniest line I’ve ever written. Could I submit that to The Onion? “I could write a killer Voltron screenplay.”
