All This Talk of Aldermen…

whoiswho.jpg

I didn’t think I realized that the day after Valentine’s Day is traditionally “Alderman Day” – where we celebrate the men and women who stand up and fight for the rights of you and me.

Or at least get to stand up – and make an ass of themselves – and get paid a lot of money to do it.

Well, I live in Berwyn, not Chicago. And, contrary to popular belief, we have a sort of government of our own. It includes a Mayor, and Aldermen (one Alderwoman). Now, if you were to ask me to name any of them, I couldn’t – except mine. Mike Phelan. He lives two doors down from me. At least that’s the buzz on the patios. Personally, I’ve never seent he guy. All I know is that his is the first sidewalk to get shovelled, the first trash to get picked up, and the longest car on the block parks in front of the house. I don’t know about you – but that screams Alderman.

I tried finding a picture of him – no luck. Google says the man does not exist. So then I went to Berwyn’s website (note to self, ask them if they want a redesign) to look him up. Here’s what I found. Not much help there either. He doesn’t even have his own website. So what does he stand for? How long has he been Alderman? Why did he move into MY neighborhood? I now have so many questions…. I feel a little Pam Zeckman/Larry Yellen thing coming on.

Today, I start an investigative journey to finding out exactly WHO this Mike J. Phelan, Alderman of the 6th Ward in Berwyn, really is.

If anyone has anything – you can email me here. Don’t worry, I’ll keep your identity secret.

Is that a Peabody I smell….?
