I Read The News So You Don’t Have To

I am following the Cook County budget saga so you don’t have to. I know you see the third story on the 10pm news and your mind wanders. Consider me your third story cliff notes. My only disclaimer is that I am a C+ student, at best. If you want today’s manifesto about Stroger and Co., join me after the jump!

So Todd Stroger got booed at the Barack Obama rally at UIC. All the politicians were introduced and the crowd turned on Stroger. Why? Cause they all think he’s an idiot. He’s trying to cut 500 million in defecits. Man, doesn’t it seem like Stroger thought this job would give him the ultimate respect he was looking for? Maybe he wanted his Dad’s love and he thought this would get it. Instead, he gets booed by DEMOCRATS at a rally. Ouch. It takes a lot for Dems to boo. Especially the Obama white liberal women types that were all front and center at the rally.

It was just announced that Todd is putting the squeeze on the south side Provident hospital. It’s an old hospital with a lot of problems. He is firing the head. A John Fairman? Don’t know him. Do you? The Tribune tells us that this news comes after he fired the brother, J.W. Fairman from the Cook County Juvenile system. Hmmm. My spider sense is tingling. So at first you think that is more than a coincidence, right? My first thought when reading that is he must have an axe to grind with the Fairmans. Maybe they wronged him and now that he is running things, he used the veil of budget cuts to strike. It could very well be the case. Maybe the Fairman brothers were making short jokes and/or embarrassing Todd at family parties, like some passive/aggressive move where at first it seems playful but you realize the stinging intent. You then grab your coat cause it got weird. Again, maybe they disrespected him. And what does Todd want? You guessed it. Respect. So the Fairman brothers are feeling the wrath.

But upon further inspection, I realized that the Fairman brothers were actually tied up pretty tight in Cook County government. Yep, they were both appointed by predecessors and they were both involved in bad-doings. One actually got run out of Denver and Houston for fraud charges and mishandling the health care systems. In short, they are the exact gentleman that Forest Claypool (the challenger) is calling out Stroger for not stepping up and firing. According to Google, Claypool went nuts when the brothers were hired by….you guessed it – John Stroger (and Bobbi Steele). So Todd is actually doing what the opponents say he won’t. He’s cleaning it up. He’s saving 2 million by doing it. A far cry from the 500 mil, but still…

Could it be true? Could Todd just be a victim of bad PR and some ambitious yuppie Claypools? It leads me to the next question – should all the Cook County commissioners be held responsible for the 500 million dollar defecit, not just the President? I mean, they voted too? So why aren’t they helping to clean this up as opposed to just complaining about Todd? I have watched all the county commissioners grandstand on local media about how they are worried about the government and worried about Todd Stroger. They say he is doing everything wrong and the county is in bad shape. But the last time I checked, Todd just started. These commissioners have been in office for years.

I wonder if they would boo Forest Claypool at a Barack Obama rally?
